Explanations of some terms commonly seen in the UWB field:

AbbreviationFull termExplanation
IEEEInstitute of Electrical and Electronics EngineersThe world's largest professional association for electrical, electronic and computing fields and related science and technology. Common standards such as Wi-Fi and Ethernet are defined by it.
ToFTime of FlightThe time a signal takes to travel from one point to another.
LoSLine of SightIn a physical radio channel configuration, a direct line of sight exists between transmitter and receiver.
NLoSNon Line of SightIn a physical radio channel configuration, there is no direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver — for example, a wall in between.
RTLSReal Time Location SystemA system designed to provide real-time location information about various items.
TWRTwo Way RangingA ToF-based distance measurement method, computed from two-way communication between transmitter and receiver.
TDoATime Difference of ArrivalA method of deriving transmitter position information. It records the arrival times of transmissions at two physically different locations (whose clocks are synchronised); the difference in arrival times provides information about the transmitter's position. Multiple TDoA measurements at different locations can uniquely determine the transmitter's position.
PDoAPhase Difference of ArrivalA method of determining the propagation direction of a radio wave arriving at an antenna array, from the phase difference of the signal received at each antenna array element.
